Statistical press notice: NHS cancelled elective operations - quarter ending 31 December 2010

The following statistics were released today by the Department of Health:

  • During the quarter ending 31 December 2010, 16,785 elective operations were cancelled at the last minute for non-clinical reasons. In the same period in 2009, there were 15,765 cancelled elective operations.
  • Cancelled elective operations during the quarter represented 1.0% of all elective activity compared to 0.9% in the corresponding period in 2009/10.
  • Of these cancellations, 521 (3.1%) of patients were not treated within 28 days of a cancellation.  In the same period in 2009, 521 (3.3%) of patients were not treated within 28 days.
