Steroid use in young people 'doubled'

11th June 2009

One of the government’s top drug advisers Professor Les Iversen has warned that the number of young people taking steroids may have doubled in five years.

He thinks an explosion in websites selling the muscle-building drug has made it far easier to get hold of but the majority of users do not realise they are taking an illegal substance. There are also concerns that the steroids being ordered are likely to be out of date. Scientists say figures showing that 70,000 people in the UK use the drug, is a huge underestimate.
