Stillbirth rate lowest on record

1st February 2012

Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS) has reported that the number of stillbirths in the country has fallen to its lowest recorded rate.

Figures from the watchdog for 2010 showed the stillbirth rate dropped below five per 1,000 deaths for the first time after more than a decade of relatively static stillbirth rates. Deaths in the first year of life also dipped to its lowest recorded rate, at 3.7 per 1,000 live births. The HIS report also found a link between obesity and stillbirth, and between infant death and smoking and deprivation.
