Strike backlog could take weeks to clear

6th October 2011

Northern Ireland Health Minister Edwin Poots has said that the backlog caused by the Unison strike could take weeks to clear.

Thousands of health and education workers have staged a 24-hour walkout in protest at budget cuts but the Department of Health said that 2,400 appointments or procedures have been cancelled as a result of the action. Most of the hospital appointments cancelled in Northern Ireland are for outpatients but some day procedures and elective surgeries have also been postponed.
