Sunbed addict warns others

21st October 2010

A 37-year-old woman who used a sunbed everyday as a teenager has suffered cancer three times.

Sonya McGrory would also lay in the Mediterranean sun until she looked like a "roast chicken".

But after a holiday in Menorca she developed a large malignant melanoma above her knee, which had to be cut out by surgeons and four years later found a second lump in her groin, which was also removed. She later developed another lump on her back.

Now in remission, Sonya who lives in Coventry with husband Pete, 39, and son Joshua, eight, said she was lucky to be alive and now covers herself in SPF30 whenever the sun comes out.

She said: “I started using sunbeds when I was 15 and at some points used them every day. I was a silly girl who just wanted to be brown - but I was wish I'd seen the future as that would have stopped me destroying my skin.”

The call centre worker, who never used protection stronger than SPF2, said: “I know that people think tans look healthy and fake tans are not great but it is just not worth it.

“I think there should be greater regulation on sunbeds because people don't know their limits - I certainly didn't. I do worry when I walk around and see people burning their skin in the sun because it is just so dangerous.”

Some 9,000 people are diagnosed with skin cancer in the UK every year, although Cancer Research UK estimates this will rise to 15,500 by 2024.
