Sunday roast salt levels warning

According to the results of a UK survey, many ready-made products used for Sunday lunches contain high levels of salt.

Consensus Action on Salt and Health (CASH) looked at 600 products sold in the UK and discovered that many items contained excessively high amounts of salt.

CASH said substituting freshly prepared food for ready-made items would drastically reduce salt levels.

The group said Sunday lunches could be "balanced and healthy" meals but that serving ready-made food could mean people were eating almost 10g of salt in one meal.

The recommended daily amount for an adult is 6g. CASH said if people looked carefully at labels and prepared fresh food they could serve a lunch which contained less that 2g salt.

CASH said the products with the highest salt levels included Asda's peppered beef brisket joint (2.3g per 212.5g serving), Tesco's root vegetable mash (1.6g per 250g serving) and Sainsbury's red cabbage (1.01g per 150g serving).

Morrison's English mustard contained, per serving, the same amount of salt as a packet of crisps.

Professor Graham MacGregor from the Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine, and chairman of CASH, said: "Unnecessary amounts of salt are still being hidden in our food."

"This puts both adults and children at risk of developing high blood pressure which causes strokes, heart attacks and heart failure, the commonest cause of death and disability in the UK. It is the food industry's responsibility to take the salt out," he added.
