Swab left inside mother

19th February 2008

A London hospital has launched an investigation after a swab was left inside a woman during an emergency Caesarean delivery operation.

Three days after Sahar Asma Sarfaraz, 26, of Beckenham, south London, gave birth at the Princess Royal University Hospital in Orpington an x-ray revealed the swab had not been removed. The woman had complained of constant pain since giving birth. Bromley NHS Trust, which runs the hospital, confirmed the sterile swab had been left inside the patient and was investigating.
