Texas blocks cancer vaccine

21st March 2007

The Texas House of Representatives has supported a bill aimed at overturning plans for the compulsory vaccination of schoolgirls in the state against human papillomavirus (HPV), which can cause cervical cancer.

Representatives voted 119-21 in favour of the bill, making any possible veto attempt by Governor Rick Perry very difficult.

Representatives said they wanted to allow parents to decide whether or not to vaccinate their daughters against HPV.
