The power of Google

6th May 2006

If ever there was a stark example of just how ubiquitous Google really is, we were given a heads up this week. We knew at the end of April that we had been accepted onto the Google news service and expected this would increase the steady trickle of NHS visitors the site was attracting as we went into May. Were we in for a surprise!

Before we had initiated any significant marketing drive to bring people to the site we had sent out one email shot to a group of selected users hoping they would respond and put the website through its paces. The result was a steady 100 or so visitors a day. Suddenly, this figure jumped by 1500 and hc2d was suddenly being swamped with hits.

We were not expecting this and it didn't take long to realise that the additional referrals were coming in from Google news. What it does show is that there is a huge demand out there for healthcare news but I'll also let you into a secret; there's even more demand  for information on bird flu which have turned out to be our most read articles so far. On the evidence of this last week, we could even launch an "Avian Flu News" service on its own.

As I said, the power of Google. Though we're still debating how we should respond to this, expect changes to the site very shortly...
