Third of babies born in 2012 will live to be 10027th March 2012
The Office for National Statistics has predicted that one third of babies born this year can expect to reach the age of 100.
Experts at the ONS said in their report - called 'What are the chances of surviving to age 100' - that 156,000 women and 135,000 men could survive to the age of 100.
According to their predictions, this means that 95,000 people who reach the age of 65 this year will also live to the age of 100 in 2047.
The amount of people who live to see their 100th birthday has increased from 600 in 1961 to almost 13,000 in 2010.
The figure has been predicted to reach 14,500 this year and to reach 100,000 by 2035, with more females than males living to see the age of 100.
The report has been released as MPs confirmed they will "double funding for dementia research" in the UK.
The number of people with dementia has been predicted to exceed 1 million in the next ten years.
The report said there were 826,000 babies under the age of one alive in the UK, with 423,000 males and 403,000 females. However, females have a longer life expectancy than males, with more predicted to reach the age of 100.

Every living thing has an average lifespan, for humans this is about 80-85 the same as it was 200 years ago and will be for the next 200 years. As long as they do not die earlier due to war, disease, ill health or accident. Life expectancy is better and will improve but this is not the same as all living longer,it just means that in the future there will be more older people in their mid 80's.
All of these statistics about projected life expectancy seem to have more to do with everyone working longer so governments, pension and insurance companies can claw back the massive losses incurred due to bad investments.
Its going to be a bit disappointing for future generations retiring at 70 thinking they have another thirty odd years of life.
