Thousands of hospital beds should be closed

17th March 2010

Centre right group think tank Reform has said that thousands of hospital beds in England should go to save money and improve care.

With advances in technology and rising rates of conditions like diabetes seeing the focus should shift towards more community services, it suggests that in some areas up to a quarter of beds could go. The government says the decision rests with local health organisations, while the British Medical Association said cuts made for purely financial reasons would be "immoral".
