'Three-person IVF' moves closer

20th January 2012

A public consultation will be used to decide whether a technique known as "three-person IVF" can be offered to couples who need it.

The technique can be employed when there is the danger of a mother passing on a serious genetic defect to her child. After the consultation, MPs will consider whether or not to allow patients to be given it. Research into how safe the procedure is will also be carried out at Newcastle University.
