Too much salt in sandwiches5th July 2007
Research by a health lobby group has found packaged sandwiches can have as much salt as "several bags of crisps."
Consumer Action on Salt and Health (Cash) examined 140 sandwiches. 40% were found to contain 2g of salt, with some containing over that amount. An adult's recommended maximum daily intake of salt is 6g. In the UK, average consumption of salt is between 9g and 10g a day.
The British Sandwich Association criticised the research and said: "it is not the sandwich industry's job to dictate to consumers what they choose to eat."
Cash found that the "All Day Breakfast" types of sandwich had the highest salt levels across the board, but cheese and meat sandwiches also featured.
Asda's Extra Special Yorkshire Ham and Hawes Wensleydale sandwich came top. It contained 3.9g of salt - 65% of the recommended daily intake. In second place was Pret a Manger's All Day Breakfast sandwich, which had 3.54g of salt. Tesco's Finest All Day Breakfast came third with 3.5g.
The group pointed out that these sandwiches have the same amount of salt as seven bags of crisps.
Sandwiches with the lowest amount of salt were Co-op Healthy Living Tuna and Cucumber and Tesco Healthy Living Chicken Salad, which both contained 0.6g.
Jim Winship, director of the Sandwich Association said that a level of 2g was acceptable.
Cash said that consumption of 2g of salt in a sandwich was not the problem, it was the fact that people often combine a sandwich with "other things" such as crisps and biscuits.
