Top doctor announces retirement

23rd December 2011

Wales’ chief medical officer Dr Tony Jewell is to step down next summer after six years in the post.

Dr Jewell, 61, had provided independent professional advice and guidance on health and healthcare matters to Welsh Government ministers and the Assembly and had championed a number of healthy lifestyle measures in Wales such as banning smoking in public places, reducing binge drinking and promoting physical activity. The Welsh government said Dr Jewell had played a key role in creating a new infrastructure for public health in Wales.
