Top sante or top shelf?

21st April 2006

I spent this afternoon working in the Kings Fund library in Cavendish Square. For research into healthcare - and to keep on top of the journals - there really isn't a better resource anywhere. But how would Healthcare Today stand up against all of the other healthcare magazines on offer? Time for a little experiment...

The Kings Fund library has a Current Issues corner where all the latest journals are lined up almost militarily on three shelf units. It's a popular spot for "browsers" to head for as it is also the only place in the library that has comfy chairs and all the daily papers are set out on coffee tables. I sneakily placed a copy of Healthcare Today in the centre of the top shelf - prime position I admit - and then took a table nearby where I could keep an eye on things while catching up with work.

Of course I wouldn't be writing this if Healthcare Today hadn't passed the test with flying colours. Almost everyone who took time to scan the shelves homed in on our first issue and - at the very least - took a few moments to flick through it. I suppose I should have moved it to the left hand side of the bottom shelf to see how well it fared there but the old adage "quit while you're ahead" sprang to mind...
