Trafford General Hospital scrap car parking fees

1st July 2010

Trafford General Hospital in Manchester has become the first English hospital to scrap car parking charges for patients and visitors.

While fees are banned in Scotland and Wales, hospitals in England make more than £100 million a year from forcing patients to pay to park but from the summer, Trafford General Hospital will buck the trend after it said it had listened to the views of patients and their families. Critics have branded hospital car park charges as a "tax on the sick".
