Trust faces prosecution over death

22nd February 2007

South West London and St George's Mental Health Trust is facing prosecution following the death of an elderly visitor.

The 88-year-old man died from injuries sustained from falling into an 18-inch hole in a path on the Springfield Hospital site on 15 December 2005.

Mr William Durrant was leaving the grounds with his wife after visiting their daughter at the hospital. He fell, fracturing his hip and wrist. He was immediately taken to hospital and received treatment for his injuries, but died a month later on 16th January 2006.

The prosecution is being carried out by the Health and Safety Executive.

If found guilty, the trust could face fines of up to £20,000 in Magistrates' Court or an unlimited fine if the case is referred to Crown Court.
