UK has best health system

A recent study on 11 nations* found the UK's health care system to be the best.

healthreport1The study looked at surveys of patients and doctors' opinions on their national medical practices, health care outcomes and health care systems between 2011-13.

The report

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall is a 2014 report for The Commonwealth Fund. It compared international health care systems, including the UK who was ranked first, closely followed by Switzerland.

The United States ranks last, despite being the most expensive healthcare system in the world.

How was it tested?

The indicators of quality were grouped into four categories: effective care, safe care, coordinated care, and patient-centered care.

The UK ranked first in all categories on quality of care but came second to Sweden on equity and third on timeliness of care.

On the negative side

The UK scored second to last on the healthy lives category which measures mortality related to medical care, infant mortality and healthy life expectancy at age of 60.

*Other nations included: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the US.
