UK lags behind on organ donation

3rd July 2008

Family doctors have expressed disappointment that the UK continues to lag behind other European countries in the levels or organ donation.

Dr Tony Calland, the chairman of the BMA’s medical ethics committee said he agreed with the House of Lords European Union Committee report on organ donation that more needs to be done to encourage people to sign the organ donor register.

He called for organ donation to be promoted to the public, more intensive care beds to cope with increased demand and an expansion in the number of doctors and other staff involved in this field.
