Vaccine for C diff hope

31st January 2008

A team of British scientists are working on a vaccine to combat the Clostridium difficile hospital bug.

Researchers from biotech firm Acambis have already carried out trials but want to test it in NHS hospitals later in the year.
C diff is not resistant to antibiotics, like MRSA, but can often reappear in an individual. The vaccine being developed by the Cambridge-based firm works like a tetanus jab, focusing on the toxins produced by the infection rather than the infection itself.
