Workmen ignore asbestos risk

22nd October 2008

The Health and Safety Executive says that 4,000 people a year are dying from the effects of asbestos.

While a quarter of the victims are former tradesmen, it has concerns that today's plumbers, electricians and joiners are underestimating the ongoing risk of asbestos, which was used for fire-proofing and insulation until a ban in 2000 but remains in some 500,000 UK buildings. The HSE says exposure to asbestos remains the biggest single cause of work-related deaths and is likely to peak at around 5,000 per year in the next five years.
