Young mums cot death warning

1st September 2008

A UK charity has said that young mothers should be aware that their babies could be "at higher risk of cot death" because of smoking.

The Foundation for Study of Infant Deaths said statistics showed there were 58 deaths in 2006, with 1.27 deaths for every 1,000 live births. Women who were over 35 showed a much lower figure of 0.23 per 1,000. Chief executive Joyce Epstein said: "It is totally unacceptable that the highest cot death rate occurs in the most disadvantaged groups."
